Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) is a food rescue and environmental organization tackling hunger and food waste by rescuing high quality surplus food and redistributing it to those in need.
SOS manages rescue and redistribution operations across four locations in Thailand, reaching 57 out of 76 provinces. Over the last several years, SOS has expanded the rescue model to Bali, Jakarta, and Metro Manila. To date, Scholars of Sustenance programs have rescued approximately 9.7 million kgs of surplus food, served 41 million meals to 3,750+ communities, and avoided 16.2 million kilograms of CO2e caused if that food were sent to landfill.
While SOS began by rescuing food primarily from hotels, it has since expanded to include farms, groceries, produce markets, restaurants, and manufacturers. Food collection happens seven days a week, 52 weeks per year, relying on full-time Food Rescue Ambassadors driving 14 refrigerated trucks, four non-refrigerated trucks, and four motorcycles, picking up and delivering on the same day.
SOS is a non-profit that is managed like a business with a strong focus on data collection and improving operational efficiency. Internally developed tools enable efficient data collection and its conversion into monthly reports for food and fund donors. Other tools have been implemented to simplify internal operations such as tracking employee time-off and managing photos of rescue work and beneficiary communities.
In addition to rescue operations, SOS also engages companies and their employees to cook for the community, works with pre-schools to deliver healthy meals to underprivileged students, increases awareness through presentations and teaching opportunities, and collaborates with government departments to expand rescue operations through volunteer networks.
Join us on our mission to deliver 50 million meals by 2025 on the road to Zero Hunger and Zero Food Waste!
