Support daily wagers in India during Covid-19

op GOONJ

On 11 March 2020, World Health Organization declared Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak as a pandemic and the nation scaling up response to treat, detect and reduce transmission to save people’s lives. With COVID 19 threatening to spread like wildfire (Stage 3), business activities have discontinued. The biggest calamity has struck for the daily wage workers and the people working in the unorganized sectors have been severely impacted by the virus and such lockdowns. A lot of them are stuck in cities with hardly any resources, they are out of jobs. With the loss of livelihoods, a large number of them will now struggle to support their families.

Goonj is gearing up for the aftermath of this pandemic and intends to reach out to families in remote villages who due to paucity of resources and livelihood options are badly affected. Goonj plans to address the material needs of these families and plans to stabilize them through one of its time tested Vaapsi initiative (Restoring livelihood). An approach adopted post disaster which not only gives a meaningful employment locally but also makes a dent
on forced migration.

We aim to
 Reach comprehensive family kits of essentials – largely dry ration, personal care material to the affected communities in areas well known for migration and related geographies.
 To bring a larger impact on family income and resources other health related issues, debt, education will be looked upon as per need as a lot of these areas are known to us well.
